The two founding members of Magnum Opus have been making music together under that name since 1988, have two self-released full-length albums, a greatest hits compilation and eager fans waiting for the next time they take to the studio.
Practicing with a revolving door of drummers, bassists and keyboard players between 1989 and 1992, including Tom Horwedel, Paul Hosler, Jimmy V and Jeff Peters, the necessary tightness and solidification of a performing band didn't form until the addition of Jim Tulk in 1992. Tulk brought with him passion, commitment and talent as a strong drummer. The addition of musician extraordinaire Matt Darbro in 1993 finally added that much-needed low end to the formula. Unfortunately, the tensions associated with superstardom built up quickly and Magnum Opus imploded by the end of 1993, never to perform live again.

Tackett and Jarrell have put their 1994 breakup (purportedly due to creative differences and arguments over dressing room size) behind them and recorded two new songs in 1999 for the "Scattered Pieces" compilation album released in 2000. A planned reunion with drummer Jim Tulk, however, was cancelled when Tulk moved to Michigan. Bassist Matt Darbro lived in the Los Angeles area for several years before returning to Indiana. He has continued to work on solo projects.
With influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Frank Zappa and Vangelis to Rush, the collective members of the band brought their own styles and feelings into the songs. They were not trying to follow in anyone's footsteps but instead tried to take several different styles of music and blend them together; either to create something new or sometimes "just to clash." Interest still runs high for fans of the group and their sound is still fresh. Maybe they were just ahead of their time.
